The Art of accessorizing

People often say an outfit needs accessories.

But... does it?

I'm not so sure, because accessories aren't there to rescue an outfit.

If the clothes only start making sense once you've added three necklaces, oversized earrings, a belt, six bracelets and a statement bag... maybe the outfit wasn't really working to begin with.

To me, a good outfit should already feel complete on its own.

Accessories don't create style. They are simply here to help you express it a little more clearly.

More than decoration

I've always found it fascinating that you can put the exact same black dress on two different people and end up telling two completely different stories.

Minimalist.

Romantic.

Edgy.

Elegant.

Artistic.

The dress hasn't changed but with the right accessories, the message has.

Sometimes all it takes is a pair of sculptural earrings, or a silk scarf.

Even subtle change like silver jewelry instead of gold will change the vibe.

The best part is that the clothes remain exactly the same, but the intention suddenly becomes obvious.

That's why I don't really see accessories as decoration but more like a language.

They don't replace the outfit.

Accessories are not here to hide your outfit choice but to support it, and make help you express yourself even more.

Styling or decorating?

I think we often confuse those two things: styling and decorating.

Styling is intentional, it is your expression, your energy, your vibe.

When decorating is adding.

There's a difference.

You don't wear a belt because there's an empty space around your waist.

You wear it because it strengthens the silhouette, because you are styling the drape of a dress around it or because it had some subtle accent where you wanted too.

You don't choose statement earrings because your ears look empty.

You choose them because they naturally pull attention toward your face, because they accentuate the style you were going for today.

Every accessory should have a reason to exist.

Not a complicated reason, but just an intentional one.

That's also why I don't believe accessories are some magical shortcut.

If the outfit underneath doesn't feel right, adding more usually doesn't solve anything.

It simply creates more to look at.

Knowing when to stop

People often say "less is more."

And even if I like it, I don't think that's always true.

Some people wear ten rings, layered necklaces, bold earrings and a collection of bracelets, and somehow it all works beautifully.

Because that's their language.

Maximalism isn't the same as excess.

A maximalist outfit can still feel incredibly balanced when every piece contributes to the same story.

Over-accessorizing is something else.

It's when every accessory starts competing for attention instead of working together.

You don't even know where to look.

Finally, instead of feeling stylish, the outfit starts feeling uncertain as though you're still searching for the answer.

Ironically, adding more can sometimes hide the very thing you're trying to express.

Learning the place of the outfit, and accessories

Studying fashion also changed the way I look at accessories. When you're designing a garment, you don't start by thinking about the jewelry that will go with it. The silhouette has to work first. The proportions have to feel balanced. The garment has to stand on its own.

Accessories come later.

That completely changed the way I get dressed too. If an outfit only works after I've added five different accessories, I don't really see that as a successful outfit. I would rather go back and rethink the clothes than keep adding more.

A little reminder

I don't think accessories exist to make us more interesting.

If they have to carry the entire outfit, they're already working too hard.

A beautiful accessory doesn't distract from the clothes.

It quietly connects everything together.

Sometimes that's a pair of earrings.

Sometimes it's a belt.

Sometimes it's nothing at all.

Because knowing when not to add something is just as much a part of style as knowing when to do it.
